September Update: Classes return!

2 Comments on September Update: Classes return!

With the festival over we can finally get back to bopping one another on the head! Our classes will be starting up again this week, starting tomorrow the 6th at the Charteris Centre, on Pleasance.

1930 on Tuesdays: German Fighting Arts

Our Tuesday evening classes are returning, with a focus on the use of the two handed longsword, and the one handed long-knife, as described in the late middle ages german fencing maunuals.

We will be starting off looking at an interesting pair of techniques: The Slicing Off, and The Pressing of the Hands.

Swords and gear are available to borrow, and beginners are welcome to attend. Drop me an email if you plan to come along for the first time.

1930 on Fridays: Freeplay, Greatsword

Fridays are open for our members to spar and experiment with whatever takes their fancy! Longsword, messer and shield, rapier, spear, sabre, broadsword, etc.

We shall also be running our greatsword study group on Fridays, so if you fancy learning how to use the biggest swords ever made come along and give em a whirl!

Discord and Gear Recommendations

We have a DDS Discord server, which you are welcome to join. A couple of people have asked for gear recommendations, our list of suggested kit can be found here, along with other resources that we think are useful, and a bunch of sword-related chat.

See you soon,

Jack

Hi there, myself and my partner are interested in coming along to one of the Tuesday sessions as total beginners. Can you let us know if there’s anything else you need, and also advise what we should wear and what costs there are? We are female, 32, and male, 31, for reference and both non-students if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance, Jocelyn and Jared

      Hi Jocelyn,

You are both welcome to come along next Tuesday!

Your first session is free of charge. Subsequent sessions are £8 each.

I’d suggest clothing suitable for athletic activity, and some trainers, the flatter the sole the better. Other than that, all you need bring is some water to drink, as we have loaner gear available for beginners.

Look forward to seeing you and Jared along soon! Any other questions please feel free to ask.
